Saying Thank You in Japanese

Way more than just "arigatou" — the full spectrum.

In Japanese, how you say "thank you" tells people a lot about your relationship and the situation. A quick "domo" between friends and a full "makoto ni arigatou gozaimasu" to a client are worlds apart — but both are correct in their context. Japan also has a strong culture of thanking people after the fact — the next time you see someone who helped you, you're expected to thank them again. Knowing these patterns makes you sound natural instead of textbook.
